2007 Easter Thunderball

One unusual feature of the Easter Thunderball at Santa Pod was the terrific weather over the weekend. Clear blue skies put everyone in a good frame of mind. After arriving at the track thursday afternoon, we soon had the car scrutineered and the awning errected. As crew chief Andy couldn’t make it to the track until good friday morning the car was put on stands for the night.
Friday mornings qualifying sessions didn’t start as we had expected. The dragsters engine refused to start during the early morning fire up. The fault was traced to the optical eye in the Uni-lite distributor. As we had no replacement with us, Steve Johnson kindly lent us his spare distibutor. With this fitted the car fired up instantly.
Although we missed the first qualifying session, by saturday evening we had qualified in the number four spot. This was a great result in our first meeting in the Super Pro ET class, running within 6 thousands of our dial in. We also ran our best time and speed, 8.54 secs at 156.77 mph. In the first round of eliminations we were up against Ian Tubb in his EDA blown Chevrolet dragster. Unfortunately a red light put us out of competition. Ashley Bell won the meeting, but suffered damage to the bodywork of his AC Cobra when it spun and collided with the concrete barrier as he crossed the finishing line in the final.
